Psam 87
Psalm 87
A psalm of the sons of Korah
1. His foundation is in the holy mountains.
According
to Spurgeon’s Treasury of David, God chose to found His earthly temple upon
the mountains of Zion. These were made
holy by the fact that God chose them.
Like
the mountains around Jerusalem, God also lends His attributes for the strength
of the church. He founded the church on
His own power.
Surely
the writer had long contemplated the mountains and then he starts the passage
with a burst of wonder and adoration. The mountains of Zion are there to
witness.
2. The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than
all the dwellings of Jacob. ( Psalm 78:67
says He rejected the tent of Jacob).
dwellings
- mishchan (meesh-kahn) a place of residence, a tabernacle, a dwelling
place. This is from the root word shachan which is shekinah, “abiding in the presence and glory” of the Lord.
Verse two is clear that God has the greatest love for Zion,
His elect nation, which descended from his servant Jacob. He favors Jerusalem and makes a display of
it.
This
speaks of the importance that each believer identifies himself with the church,
where His love is revealed most, that is the place our delight is to
found. We prefer the assembly of the
church rather than our own dwellings.
What power and strength there is in the church, there our God and Savior
reigns.
3.
Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God! Selah
The
glory of Jerusalem! The people speaking
of Jerusalem! This is a type of the most
glorious things of all. The church is so
excellent a subject to be spoken of in the places man congregates! Hephzibah,
“for my delight is in her”, the bride of Christ, the city of beauty, the eye of the world, the
Lord chose to dwell in you.
4. “I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to
those who know Me; behold, O Philistia and Tyre, with Ethiopia: this one was born there.”
This is
referring to the regenerate cities, the cities that bow before the Lord.
5. And of Zion it shall be said, “This one and
that one were born in her; and the most high Himself shall establish her.”
Each
one born in her is precious in His sight, each one not lost in the multitude. The same holds true of those born into the
church, renewed in the image of Christ!
We are individuals he sees in the body of Christ, the church.
6. The Lord will record, when He registers the
peoples: “This one was born there.” Selah
The
registry of the Lord counts His chosen both in life and death. His registration includes those we have
disowned and excludes those we owned.
We are not judges, and many times, we see people differently than the
Lord sees them. It is alarming as to why
we think we can made judgments of people.
We cannot. Only He can do
that. Oh, to be written in the Lord’s
registry by the Lord Himself!
7. Both the singers and the players on
instruments say, “All my spring are in you.”
What a
beautiful verse! All my springs are in
you Lord! You are my comfort, strength,
joy, life, and everything, the springs of my life! Oh, that I could express that to be the
powerful sentence that it is! Blessed be
the name of the Lord!
